Biography

When Andy Colvin was a kid, he lived in a neighborhood called Pleasant Dell, in the town of Mound, WV. Many people in the area had encounters with a mysterious bird-man now famously known as “Mothman." The historic Mothman sightings were portrayed in the motion picture "The Mothman Prophecies." Colvin found that he could draw, paint, and take photographs after seeing the creature. He was recognized as an artistic prodigy at his elementary school, where his drawings still hang. In 1973, Colvin’s sister unwittingly took a picture of him with what appears to be Mothman in the background.

Colvin's relentless videotaping of the Austin social scene in the 1980s is said to have influenced the style of the cult film "Slacker," which heralded the rise of "Generation-X."

Andy Colvin is now a photographer, cine-ethnographer, and writer who has been interviewing witnesses to strange events for over two decades. In addition to his ongoing 25-year project, "The Unauthorized Biography of Slacker," Colvin has shot documentaries on several subjects, including the Seattle WTO protests and the McVeigh execution. Prior to shooting documentaries, Colvin wrote music and worked on commercial films, in art museums, and in photographic studios. A founding member of the Austin Film Society, Colvin’s work has been seen or heard in all 50 states, and in several foreign countries. His 33-hr. reality series, "The Mothman’s Photographer," has won fans throughout the world for its down-to-earth approach to potentially solving one of the world’s greatest mysteries. His wide-ranging "Mothman's Photographer" book trilogy has become a hot topic in the alternate press for its unique study of the interaction between the paranormal, politics, and the media.

Photographs from Colvin’s first book, "The Mothman’s Photographer: The Work of an Artist Touched by the Prophecies of the Infamous Mothman" can be viewed online at the Cincinnati Gallery of Conceptual Art. Colvin’s latest book, "The Mothman’s Photographer II: Meetings With Remarkable Witnesses Touched by Paranormal Phenomena, UFOs, and the Prophecies of WV's Infamous Mothman," is available at fine booksellers and here at this site. Colvin’s third book, "The Mothman’s Photographer III," featuring his West Coast research, is due out in 2008. Colvin is currently teaming up with hipster historian Adam Gorightly for a fourth mind-bending Mothman book, tentatively called "Garudian Angel." Colvin is also working with famous artist Bruce Bickford (cohort of Frank Zappa) on a Mothman graphic novel.
