In the late 1970s, Colvin studied journalism at Marshall University, where he tutored with media icons Ralph Turner (who originally reported on Mothman) and Matt Lauer (now of The Today Show). Colvin received his bachelors' degree from the Art Academy of Cincinnati in 1982, and studied graduate photography/film at the University of Texas at Austin from 1982-1988. While in Austin, Colvin studied with anthropology stars Steven Feld (who studied "bird" tribes in New Guinea), Terence Grieder (Pre-Columbian art expert) and Linda Schele (who broke the Mayan code). While a teaching assistant at the University of Texas, Colvin teamed up with the Seemen's Kal Spelletich and Prof. Bill Lundberg to began the new Transmedia Dept., which has since become a popular and influential force in the Austin arts community. While a museum assistant, Colvin helped bring cutting edge artists to Virginia Commonwealth University. One such artist was Laurie Anderson, with whom Colvin collaborated.
